Road salt threatens drinking water, lakes

Over the past 16 years, sodium in tap water from at least three of Madison's 24 municipal wells has repeatedly exceeded recommended levels, and could eventually affect human health if it continues to rise, a new city report warns. Madison's lakes also are routinely "shocked" by high levels of salt-laden snowmelt that threatens the health of aquatic plants and animals, the report says.
