When Adam Boesel opened the first Green Microgym on Northeast Alberta Street in Portland two years ago, he did it because he was a personal trainer who wanted to establish a business that might allow him to retire some day — The Green Microgym aims to support neighborhood businesses by offering "Burn and Earn" incentives to gym members. Credit at local businesses, to the tune of $1 per hour, is awarded to members who stick to their workout schedules.
The franchise fee is a $20,000 one-time payment plus a $500 monthly royalty and $100 marketing fee.
"I wanted to keep it simple and straightforward," Boesel said.
Dan Caplan, who is also a personal trainer, convinced family members to go in with him to open the first franchised Green Microgym just off Southeast Belmont Street. He expects to open on November 1.
"The reaction has been amazing," Caplan said. "People are looking forward to supporting a locally owned and eco-friendly gym."
"Sometimes when we have a spinning class going, we generate a lot of excess power," he said.
