The waste, one third of all food produced worldwide gets lost or wasted

Metafilter -  According to a recent report from the United Nations Environment Program, about one third of all food produced worldwide gets lost or wasted, either during processing or consumption. In the United States, alone, that works out to about twenty pounds of food per person, per month. Most of that food waste goes into landfills - and organic waste, like food, makes up the second largest component of landfills, which are the planet's largest source of methane emissions.
