13 ways to make getting around more green (and safer)

Been wanting to make your transportation a little easier on the earth but don't know where to start? Or, if you're already doing a little bit, do you want to do more? Whatever your situation, Treehugger's got some simple tips for you. Their post on the top ten effective ways to go greener includes ones you've heard before (ride a bus, walk more) as well as some less easy ways to greenify getting around (telecommute, become an activist for public transportation). On top of their ten tips, the list also includes three ways to do more: ditch your car, buy carbon offset vouchers for your trips, and raise your voice in support of even cleaner public transportation (don't just advocate for a bus line, demand a bus line with hybrid buses).

One fact jumped out at me, and it has nothing to do with being environmentally friendly: riding a bus is 79 times safer than riding in your own automobile. I don't know where Treehugger got this statistic, but it sure makes me feel better about stepping on a bus. [Source: Treehugger  VIA-autobloggreen.com]
