Tony Hayward, chief executive officer of BP, about the effect of the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on the company's efforts to rehabilitate its image after the 2005 Texas City refinery explosion and a 2006 pipeline leak in Alaska

Comment: I have met 100's of EHS professionals in the chemical and petro chemicals fields. I have never met any that did not have a great deal of respect for safety and environment. Maybe 20 years ago, but with massive OSHA and EPA fines and human life loss potential... the industry has vastly improved. I think there are some misinformed and misguided activists and pseudo environmentalists who need to stop complaining and ask how they can actually do something by getting involved and offering support. Remember, it is OUR CHOICE to buy the oil from an industry with inherent risks to human life and the environment that can never be fully mitigated.
These choices come with sacrifices.
