HIV infection rate fell 25% in 2001-2009

A new report from UNAIDS details the progress made in the fight against AIDS. Overall, infection rates dropped 25% between 2001 and 2009, while some at-risk populations continued to contract HIV. Sex workers, gay men and intravenous drug users all showed increased infection rates between 2008 and 2010. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "The number of people becoming infected and dying is decreasing, but the international resources needed to sustain this progress have declined for the first time in 10 years, despite tremendous unmet needs."
