Position Title Director, Environmental Health and Safety Office

Position Function:
Responsible for the administration and facilitation of
programs such as occupational and student safety, environmental
management, program management and documentation, and fire protection
affecting the programs of the university. Primary duties include the day-
to-day management and overall coordination of the Environmental Health and
Safety Office (EHS). The director reports to the Vice President for
Research and Economic Development, with input from the Vice President of
Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine, and the Vice President for
Campus Services. Per the regulations of the State of Mississippi
Department of Health and the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the
successful applicant will be required to undergo a FBI background check
that will include the submission of fingerprints. Employment is contingent
upon a favorable response to the background check.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develops, implements, and
manages the budget of the EHS Office to ensure the office is operating
effectively within the established fiscal guidelines.

2. Responsible for the development, management, and implementation of
policies and programs related to occupational and student safety,
environmental management, program management and documentation, and fire
protection.

3. Responsible for the management of staff engaged in safety functions,
including assignment of job duties, evaluation of performance, and
professional development opportunities. Provides input to supervision and
evaluation of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station
(MAFES) and MSU Extension Service supervisors of relevant safety staff in
those units. Works with MAFES and MSU Extension, and other administrators,
to ensure adequate resources are available to assure a safe workplace and
educational environment. Provides staff with guidance, resources, and
support to ensure desired outcomes. Facilitates resolution of any
conflicts related to safety issues.

4. Coordinates program implementation and management with department and
unit administrators to ensure financial and operational effectiveness as
well as regulatory compliance.

5. Responsible for the development, implementation, and continuity of
standard operating procedures for safety across all university units and
functions.

6. Coordinates accident and incident resolutions through investigations,
recommendation of corrective/preventive measures, and the
development/implementation of programs needed to reduce or eliminate the
probability of a reoccurrence.

7. Oversees programs designated to monitor, inspect, and ensure compliance
with corrective or preventative actions taken to reduce or remove exposure
to potentially hazardous materials and environments.

8. Advises others on issues related to lab safety, fire safety, biological
safety, radiation safety, occupational safety, and health issues relevant
to their operations.

9. Coordinates development and implementation of educational programs to
provide faculty, staff and student s opportunities to understand their
respective roles in safety.

10. Provides coordination for external safety audits.

11. Serves as the subject matter expert on matters related to changing
regulations and federal guidance as applicable to research safety.

12. Performs related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility - Supervises EHS Office with full supervisory
authority. Provides input into supervision and evaluation of other safety-
related employees, including but limited to those in MAFES and the MSU
Extension Service.

with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Not all of

Minimum Qualifications Master's Degree in a related field. Two years
experience in a progressive relevant field.

Will ABD's (all but dissertation) be considered? Not Applicable
Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree and/or three years of experience
in an academic research and safety environment. Certified Industrial
Hygienist (CIH); Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP);
Certified Health Physicist (CHP); Certified Safety professional (CSP); or
Certified Hazardous Materials Management (CHMM).
