Swiss group Design Werk recently unveiled their sleek Zerotracer electric motorcycle, which will attempt to travel around the world in eighty days using only renewable energy in the upcoming Zero Emissions Race. The bike has a top speed of 160 miles per hour, a range of 280 miles per charge, and an ambitious team determined to show the possibilities of EV transportation. A lot of electric motorbikes are being developed lately, but this particular one may soon be racing through a town near you. Inhabitat

90 Percent More Efficient Air Conditioner

National Renewable Energy Laboratory has invented a new air conditioning system that uses 50 to 90 percent less energy than the best available units. The Desiccant-Enhanced eVaporative air conditioner -- DEVap -- combines membranes, evaporative cooling and liquid desiccants in a way that has never been done before.

NREL mechanical engineer Eric Kozubal, who co-invented the system, says the goal is to revolutionize cooling while removing millions of metric tons of carbon from the air. It cools and dries the air in one step. Evaporative cooling, blowing air across a wet surface to promote evaporation, has long been used in swamp coolers, as Technology Review notes. The DEVap takes it a step further, dividing air into two streams that are separated by a polymer membrane.

Water passes through one airstream, making it cooler and wetter. The cooler air cools the membrane, which cools the air on the other side, without making that side any more humid.
Another process dries the air, making the system effective even in humid locales -- a big step toward reducing refrigeration-based air conditioning, which is used in most of the country and is responsible for about 5 percent of the nation's energy consumption.
The process uses much less energy than a traditional air conditioner, and doesn't rely on any refrigerants, which produce chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC). That also helps the environment, because a pound of CFC or HCFC in refrigerant-based A/Cs contributes as much to global warming as 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, NREL says. Read full at PopSci

EPA Launches New Program to Green America’s Capitals

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is launching a new technical assistance program to help state capital cities design more sustainable communities. Greening America's Capitals will assist state capitals, selected through a competitive application process, develop a vision of distinctive, environmentally friendly neighborhoods that incorporate innovative green building and green infrastructure. This program is a new project of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities between EPA, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

"EPA is excited to work with our partners at HUD and DOT to offer this new design assistance to capital cities," said Lisa Heinzerling, associate administrator for EPA's Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation.  "The selected cities will offer sustainable development models for their states and for many communities around the country."

Oil Spill Cleanup Workers Don't Need Respirators?

I cleaned up a lot of petroleum hazards back in the day wearing a ton of gear.
At a minimum a respirator and petroleum resistant clothing, gloves, boots etc... were required until 'area air and soil samples confirmed safe work levels'. Only then could we downgrade our gear. That was the regulatory requirement in 92' and it has only gotten stricter...

Fast Company - the health problems common among oil spill cleanup workers. The people spraying off those birds—work that may be, ultimately, futile—are at risk, themselves.

EPA to Amend Air Toxics Emission Standards to Address HAP Definitions:

The agency's direct final rule will not alter the national emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants for paints and allied products manufacturing that are area sources of air toxics; instead, the rule will amend the definition of "material containing hazardous air pollutants" to include non-carcinogens in quantities of 1.0 percent by mass or more, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Voluntary carbon markets plunge in 2009

Mongabay: Battered by a faltering world economy and lack of progress on U.S. climate legislation, voluntary carbon markets declined by nearly every measure in 2009, according to the fourth annual State of the Voluntary Carbon Market Report issued today by Ecosystem Marketplace and Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The report recorded a 26 percent drop in transactions (to 94 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions reductions), a 47 percent fall in the total value of traded credits (to $387 million), and an 11 percent decline in the average price of an emission reduction (to $6.50/tCO2e).

DOE - Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced a conditional commitment to provide a partial guarantee for a $98.5 million loan by John Hancock Financial Services to the Nevada Geothermal Power Company (NGP) for a 49.5 megawatt geothermal project in Humboldt County in northwestern Nevada.

The NGP Blue Mountain ("Blue Mountain") project consists of a geothermal well field, fluid collection, and injection systems that enable energy to be extracted from rock and fluid below the Earth's surface, and a power plant that converts geothermal energy into electricity. The project has a 20-year power purchase agreement to sell electricity and renewable energy credits to Nevada Power Company.

85% of Kids’ Drinks, Snacks Could Contain High Levels of Lead

Inhabitots  Quantities of lead in bottled juice, juice boxes, and packaged fruit could exceed federal limits for the lunchbox-toting set, according to the Environmental Law Foundation. The Bay Area-based environmental nonprofit, which enlisted the aid of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-certified lab in Berkeley, tested nearly 400 samples from 150 branded products marketed to children, including apple juice, grape juice, packaged pears and peaches (including baby food), and fruit cocktail mixes. 

The alarming results: 125 out of 146 products—or more than 85%—contained enough lead in a single serving to warrant a warning label under California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known as Prop. 65.

More troubling, perhaps, is the fact that the results tar both organic and conventional products: Earth's Best Organic, 365 Everyday Value Organic, Trader Joe's, and Walnut Acres get as fair of a shake as Welch's, Minute Maid, Gerber, Del Monte, and Dole. Plus, most scientists concur that no safe level of exposure to lead exists, especially when it comes to babies and children.

ELF has dispatched notices to law-enforcement officials, including California's attorney-general, district attorneys, and the affected manufacturers, retailers, and distributors. The notices start a clock for the companies to either bring themselves into compliance with Prop. 65 or to place "clear and reasonable warnings" on the food packages. OSHA improves its online database of chemical exposures by adding a search engine

QuickTakes, OSHA posted 26 years of data on a Web page ...detailing workplace exposures to toxic chemicals such as asbestos, benzene, beryllium, cadmium, lead, nickel, and silica. This Web page has since been enhanced by the addition of a search engine to make the data more accessible and expand its usefulness as a research tool. The page's online form now allows users to search and sort records of OSHA samplings for toxic chemical exposure by categories such as establishment, industry, state, year range, substance and OSHA inspection number. Users can also download sampling data from 1984 to 2009, either in one full set or by individual year.

Over the last 50 years, foreign oil companies have spilled over 1.5 million tons of oil here, but there have been no legal convictions against them, and no compensation for spill victims. The Niger Delta is now one of the most polluted places in the world. Snip from Guardian article by John Vidal:

On 1 May this year a ruptured ExxonMobil pipeline in the state of Akwa Ibom spilled more than a million gallons into the delta over seven days before the leak was stopped. Local people demonstrated against the company but say they were attacked by security guards. Community leaders are now demanding $1bn in compensation for the illness and loss of livelihood they suffered. Few expect they will succeed. In the meantime, thick balls of tar are being washed up along the coast.

Within days of the Ibeno spill, thousands of barrels of oil were spilled when the nearby Shell Trans Niger pipeline was attacked by rebels. A few days after that, a large oil slick was found floating on Lake Adibawa in Bayelsa state and another in Ogoniland. "We are faced with incessant oil spills from rusty pipes, some of which are 40 years old," said Bonny Otavie, a Bayelsa MP. This point was backed by Williams Mkpa, a community leader in Ibeno: "Oil companies do not value our life; they want us to all die. In the past two years, we have experienced 10 oil spills and fishermen can no longer sustain their families. It is not tolerable."

With 606 oilfields, the  delta supplies 40% of all the crude the United States imports and is the world capital of oil pollution. Life expectancy in its rural communities, half of which have no access to clean water, has fallen to little more than 40 years over the past two generations. Locals blame the oil that pollutes their land and can scarcely believe the contrast with the steps taken by BP and the US government to try to stop the Gulf oil leak and to protect the Louisiana shoreline from pollution.

Toshiba Ceases Incandescent Light Bulb Production

Toshiba announced on March 17, 2010, that it has closed down its production lines for 103 types of regular incandescent light bulb. Toshiba closed the lines one year earlier than initially planned, as decided in 2008 as a part of its carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction initiative. The company expects that discontinuing the production will contribute to an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 430,000 tons, as compared to 2008, when it shipped about 20 million incandescent light bulbs.
Toshiba's production of incandescent light bulbs originated at its "Hakunetsu-sha (meaning Factory of Incandescence)" established in 1890 by Ichisuke Fujioka, one of the founders of Toshiba, as the first manufacturer of incandescent light bulbs in Japan. From an initial production scale of 10 units per day, production continued to expand until reaching an annual production peak of 78 million bulbs in 1973. Toshiba has produced a total of 4.07 billion bulbs over its 120-year history.

In 1980, Toshiba developed the world's first ball-shaped compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) in response to increasing awareness of energy saving, and has continued to develop smaller, more efficient and longer lasting CFLs. As a result, CFLs increased in popularity, while production of incandescent light bulbs began to decline around 2000. In addition, as required by the need to prevent global warming, Toshiba Light & Tech succeeded in commercializing light emitting diode (LED) lamps bright enough for practical use in 2007. The company created much more efficient and environmentally friendly LED lamps for general, and is now promoting replacement of incandescent bulbs.

These technological innovations have prompted the company to cease incandescent light bulbs production.

Oak Ridge supercomputers to model nuclear reactors

The future of nuclear energy will be found in software. The Department of Energy announced this week it will spend $122 million over the next five years to establish and operate a new Nuclear Energy Modeling and Simulation Energy Innovation Hub. The project is called the "Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors" or CASL.

The program, which includes partners from universities, industry and other national labs, will use advanced capabilities of the world's most powerful computers to make significant leaps forward in nuclear reactor design and engineering.

"The Nuclear Energy Innovation Hub is a critical element in our efforts to re-establish American leadership in nuclear energy research and development," said Deputy Secretary Dan Poneman.

ATR core The Nuclear Energy Innovation Hub will allow engineers to create a simulation of a currently operating reactor that will act as a "virtual model" of that reactor. They will then use the "virtual model" to address important questions about reactor operations and safety.

It will be used to address issues such as reactor power production increases and reactor life and license extensions. The combination of data gained from the "virtual model" and the physical reactor will be used to resolve technology issues confronting nuclear energy development.


Partnerships are core of the program

The Nuclear Energy Innovation Hub will be located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. ORNL has the big iron and the ties to high speed computer networks to tie the partners together.

Drug Manufacturing Facilities are Major Source of Drugs in Drinking Water

Hugger A five-year study conducted by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) researchers has found that pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities are a "significant source" of pharmaceuticals that enter the local environment. 

From 2004 to 2009, USGS researchers tested outflow samples from two wastewater treatment plants in New York State where more than 20 percent of the water received by the plants is from pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. The researchers found the pharmaceutical concentrations in the treated water that ends up in your faucet were 10 to 1,000 times higher than the outflows from 24 water treatment facilities around the U.S. (including one in New York State) that do not receive water from pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.


Significant Levels of Pharmaceuticals Found in Samples
While the concentrations of pharmaceuticals varied from sample to sample, the maximum concentrations were significant, and included:
  • 3,800 parts per billion (ppb) of metaxalone, a muscle relaxant
  • 1,700 ppb of oxycodone, an opioid prescribed for pain relief
  • Greater than 400 ppb of methadone, an opioid prescribed for pain relief and drug withdrawal
  • 160 ppb of butalbital, a barbiturate
  • More than 40 ppb of phendimetrazine, a stimulant prescribed for obesity,
  • More than 40 ppb of carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant
  • 3.9 ppb diazepam, an anti-anxiety medication
It should be noted that levels in receiving streams were considerably lower due to dilution, but also that researchers detected levels of pharmaceuticals up to 20 miles downstream. Numerous studies have looked at pharmaceuticals levels in streams and aquifers across the U.S., and levels are typically below 1 ppb, so these levels are of concern.

Additional Studies Documenting Other Pharmaceuticals
While the study looked at seven pharmaceuticals, additional pharmaceuticals were also detected in the samples and ongoing studies are documenting their levels.
The study is part of a long-term effort to determine the effects of chemicals and to help develop effective water management practices.

A Senate resolution to block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases failed narrowly Thursday, providing a temporary respite to environmental activists hoping to enact a mandatory cap on emissions before the end of the year.But the 47 to 53 vote showed that even in the wake of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Congress remains divided over how best to address climate change. The contentious debate, in which some lawmakers suggested federal regulation would strike a devastating blow to the economy, suggested the Senate is far from decided on whether to put a price on the industrial emissions that stem from everyday activities such as lighting a home or driving a car.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who drafted the resolution that would have barred the EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act, said the central question was whether Congress or the administration would set the rules for curbing carbon dioxide. EPA administrator Lisa P. Jackson has already proposed rules that would subject large greenhouse gas emitters -- such as coal-fired utilities and oil refineries -- to federal regulation starting next year.


Several backers, including moderate Maine GOP Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe, said they were still open to the idea of Congress crafting a climate bill. But it is very unclear what form that measure would take, because there are now several competing proposals. Sen. Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.) just introduced legislation Wednesday that would promote energy efficiency and renewable fuels but would not place a price on carbon. Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) met with key committee chairmen Thursday in an effort to draft a compromise Democratic proposal that would impose an overall cap on greenhouse gases.

"They're all over the place, which tells you there's no clear direction," said Bruce Josten, executive vice president for government affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "How many energy bills are floating around just in the Senate right now? It's very confused right now."

But Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund, said he was confident the Senate would pass climate legislation next month provided President Obama continues to press for the measure. Washington Post

...A deputy assistant attorney general for policy and planning is quoted as saying "it is not clear" who in the department is responsible for handling WMD response. Workers interviewed said the department's operational response program "lacks leadership and oversight." An unidentified Justice Department official was quoted: "We are totally unprepared." He added. "Right now, being totally effective would never happen. Everybody would be winging it." 

The inspector general's staff interviewed 36 senior officials involved in the department's emergency response planning and summarized the finding: "It was clear that no person or entity is managing the overall Department's response activities." You could almost see them scratching their heads and saying, "No one's in charge here."  

After the inspector general's report, Paul McHale, a former Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania who also served as an assistant secretary of defense under George W. Bush, told the Los Angeles Times: "There is a sense of complacency that has settled in nearly a decade after Sept. 11." The paper also quoted Randall Larsen, the former executive director of the commission that gave the government low marks in January: "They just don't see the WMD scenario as most likely," he said.


They don't? They must be idiots.  They must not be reading all the government reports of the past eight years, declaring terrorist attacks on U.S. soil not only likely but virtually certain. There are many reasons for this, and just one has to do with something Ronald Reagan mused about in his office 25 years ago. "Man has never had a weapon he didn't use," he said, to a handful of aides. If you develop the atom bomb, it will be used, as it was. If man, in his darkness, can develop and deploy nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, they will be used, too.


No one wants to think about it. I don't want to think about it. But you have to make plans. You have to imagine, you have to think about the worst case, and then you have to plan for it—literally.

BP no longer on sustainable index?

I can't imagine anyone who is selling a finite commodity that has peaked could even considered for the  Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI)???

But this week BP has been pulled from the global Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) in the wake of the giant oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Dow Jones and Sustainable Asset Management Group said the spill's effects on the environment, local communities, economic effects and damage to BP's reputation led to its removal. The indexes track the financial performance of companies applying sustainable business policies.
 Before the gulf well blow-out, fund managers were already worried about BP's troubles with accidents and safety fines dating to 2005, Reuters reports

A Guide To Our Diminishing Stockpile of Crucial Elements

Most congresspeople probably haven't thought about chemistry since high school, but they'll soon have to in order to protect the economy. In March, Colorado representative Mike Coffman introduced a bill to ramp up mining of 17 "rare-earth" elements, so called because large deposits of them are hard to find. Some are essential for electric auto motors and laser defense systems, and with demand for those rising, now is thetime to stock up.

Rare-earths combine particularly easily with other elements to form useful compounds and alloys, such as neodymium-iron-boron, the strongest, lightest magnet for motors. "No other element can do that," says Jack Lifton, an independent metals consultant. "Once we've used them up, the periodic table is closed for business." Similar stories are playing out across the table. For many elements, we'll eventually need to find more, recycle, or move on to another. Launch the gallery for a status report for 10 of them.

A new draft report by the International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management, sponsored by the UN Environment Programme, notes that “despite concern among the clean tech industry over scarcity and high prices, only around one per cent of these crucial high-tech metals are recycled, with the rest discarded and thrown away at the end of a product's life.”
Unless recycling rates are dramatically increased, the report warns, these vital raw materials could become "essentially unavailable for use in modern technology."
In addition to stretching supplies of important raw materials, better recycling of cell phones and other electronics gear would save millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions, the report adds. (Today, less than 10 percent of cell phones worldwide are recycled properly.) Such recycling could also unlock new supplies of more common but important metals such as copper and steel.

It is a "good article" highlighting the massive problems we had, have and will continue to struggle with...

This would have been a GREAT article in 2008. Now it is just a hard reminder of severity of choices we have to make when we reach peak energy resources...

At the end of the day Rolling stone staffers will fill up their cars with BP gasoline, power their presses with coal derived energy and print them on papers from protected forests using inks derived by OIL.
I guess that's why it's easier to throw stones than roll em ;-)

Ohio Nuclear Reactor Eaten by Leaky Acid, Again

The New York Times reports: a nuclear reactor where a hidden leak caused near-catastrophic corrosion in 2002 has experienced a second bout of the same problem.

In 2002, the plant, Davis-Besse, in Oak Harbor, Ohio, developed leaks in parts on the vessel head, allowing cooling water from inside the vessel, at 2,200 pounds per square inch of pressure, to leak out. The cooling water contains boric acid, which is used to control the speed of the nuclear reaction, and the acid ate away a chunk of the steel the size of a football, leaving nothing but a thin stainless-steel liner to maintain the reactor's integrity.

Which is pretty horrifying. There was only 3/8 of an inch of stainless steel between safety and a repeat of Three Mile Island. The incident was labeled a "near-miss" and vessel heads were inspected around the country. While it was discovered that other units had experienced leakage, none had been as bad as the Ohio Davis-Besse plant. To this day, experts remain unsure why that plant experienced more severe leakage. And perhaps that's part of the reason that it's happening again:

The company assumed it had solved the problem. But recently the new vessel head showed the same leakage pattern. Once again, the parts prone to leaking are nozzles through which the control rods for the reactor pass. When the rods are inserted, they choke off the flow of neutrons that sustains the reaction; when they are withdrawn, the reactor starts up. But the nozzles are prone to a problem called "stress corrosion cracking,'' leading to the leaks.
And despite the persistent leakage, the owner of the plant will continue operating it, albeit in a shorter production run. But the long-term fix to the leak -- installing a new vessel head with a sturdier alloy -- won't be done until 2014. Which is rather alarming, considering that last time these signs of leakage were observed, acid ended up eating a football-sized hole into the steel lid that supports the integrity of the nuclear reactor.

...these signs of leaks and other indicators of accidents-waiting-to-happen should be taken more seriously than ever, and regulatory agencies like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission should be put into action -- especially as the nuclear industry gets ready to build new plants for the first time in decades.

If there's any lesson to be learned from the BP Gulf spill, and the Massey coal mine tragedy before it, it's that functioning regulation must be firmly in place, and that we as a nation habitually underestimate the dangers inherent in our current energy policy. Nuclear power HTML clipboardis can be clean energy, but it also presents its share of dangers -- let's at least make sure the companies that own the reactors, and the agencies that watch over them are more prepared for the worst than BP and the Minerals & Management Services.

Want to "really" stop CO2? Really? Stop the coal fires.

IF this whole things was about mitigating CO2 emissions... we would start by reducing energy and extinguishing CO2 waste like the 1000's of coal seam fires contributing nearly as much CO2 as our 'target' to reduce by 2030?

DISCOVERY:
There are thousands of coal fires actively burning around the world.
It is estimated that China, the world's largest coal-producing country, lost anywhere between 10 and 200 million tons of coal a year to wildfires, or between 0.5 and 10 percent of national production.

Team member Leonard Levin of the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, Calif., said that fires could emit 200 tons of mercury each year, but he called the figure a "wild guess."

A report issued by the USGS earlier this year suggests just 48 tons are emitted annually, but even that is roughly equivalent to all of the mercury generated by coal-fired power plants in the United States.
Coal fires are emitting air pollution and carbon dioxide but are not even generating useful electricity... 

Seriously, if it was about CO2 why would we not start here?  Or at a minimum... if we could not stop the fire, capture and convert the source for electricity.

That is IF it were about CO2.

First new SO2 standard in 40 years will improve air quality for millions

EPA  – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing a final new health standard for sulfur dioxide (SO2). This one-hour health standard will protect millions of Americans from short-term exposure to SO2, which is primarily emitted from power plants and other industrial facilities. Exposure to SO2 can aggravate asthma and cause other respiratory difficulties. People with asthma, children, and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the effects of SO2.

"We're taking on an old problem in a new way, one designed to give all American communities the clean air protections they deserve. Moving to a one-hour standard and monitoring in the areas with the highest SO2 levels is the most efficient and effective way to protect against sulfur dioxide pollution in the air we breathe," said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. "This is one of many pollutants we've been able to significantly reduce through the Clean Air Act, keeping people healthy, protecting our environment and growing our economy. This new standard -- the first in almost 40 years -- will ensure continued success in meeting these challenges."

EPA is setting the one-hour SO2 health standard at 75 parts per billion (ppb), a level designed to protect against short-term exposures ranging from five minutes to 24 hours. EPA is revoking the current 24-hour and annual SO2 health standards because the science indicates that short-term exposures are of greatest concern and the existing standards would not provide additional health benefits.

EPA is also changing the monitoring requirements for SO2. The new requirements assure that monitors will be placed where SO2 emissions impact populated areas. Any new monitors required by this rule must begin operating no later than Jan. 1, 2013. EPA is expecting to use modeling as well as monitoring to determine compliance with the new standard.

The final rule also changes the Air Quality Index to reflect the revised SO2 standard. This change will improve states' ability to alert the public when short-term SO2 levels may affect their health.

EPA estimates that the health benefits associated with this rule range between $13 billion and $33 billion annually. These benefits include preventing 2,300 to 5,900 premature deaths and 54,000 asthma attacks a year. The estimated cost in 2020 to fully implement this standard is approximately $1.5 billion.

The first National Ambient Air Quality Standards for SO2 were set in 1971, establishing both a primary standard to protect health and a secondary standard to protect the public welfare. Annual average SO2 concentrations have decreased by 71 percent since 1980.

The final rule addresses only the SO2 primary standards, which are designed to protect public health. EPA will address the secondary standard – designed to protect the public welfare, including the environment – as part of a separate review to be completed in 2012.

EPA expects to identify or designate areas not meeting the new standard by June 2012.
