Government provides online tool to help cities reduce greenhouse gases and polluting emissions

The Canadian federal government is now providing an online calculator to help local governments plan transportation projects. The site lets the user input different scenarios such as the mix of vehicle types, mileage, mass transit options, fuel use mixtures, and more. The calculator then computes estimates of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a breakdown of other emissions such as NOx, sulfur dioxide, and CO2. By adjusting parameters such as the percentage of E85 or diesel used by cars and the amount of bus, rail or trolley use, officials can determine the effects on emissions and use the information to help determine where to best spend transportation dollars to have the greatest impact on emissions.
