Parents may want to take a gander at a new database of toxic chemicals in everyday products.
A Web site called HealthyStuff.org launches today, and reveals levels of lead, arsenic and hazardous flame retardants in school supplies, children's products and more.
The Ecology Center, an Ann Arbor-based nonprofit, unveiled the database at an event with morning in Berkley, Michigan, near Royal Oak.
The Children's Safe Products Act passed to require manufacturers and importers to disclose hazardous chemicals used in children's products sold in Michigan.
"The more we test, the more we find that the presence of toxic chemicals is widespread in everyday consumer products," Mike Shriberg, policy director at the Ecology Center, said in a statement.
"It should not be the responsibility of public health advocates to test these products. Product manufacturers and legislators must take the lead and replace dangerous substances with safe alternatives."
