Grading Science - Why does America suck at science now? I ask a scientist.
"When it comes to science education, it’s always important to note the general public’s attitude. I’ve asked my readers on multiple occasions, “which would you rather have your child excel in: language or math?”. The overwhelming majority of the readers go for language, despite being what I believe to be a generally pro-science group. Their reasoning is that without language, the child would never be able to communicate with the world, but I strongly disagree. Math is an integral part of science and understanding all aspects of the world(s) that surround(s) us. Further, it’s a language unto itself – learning math does grow some communication skill. Studies have shown that the earlier people are focused away from math and science, the less likely they are to go back to it. While it’s best to strike a balance between math and language, effort has to be made to develop strong math and science education that students will be receptive to. Focusing away from it is far more likely to pull students away from math and science permanently."
