European regulators classify formaldehyde as a presumed carcinogen

The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) of the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has concluded that formaldehyde should be listed as a “presumed human carcinogen” (Carc. 1b) based on laboratory animal evidence.  This in in contrast to the US National Toxicology Program’s decision to classify formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens and by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).  IARC decided that '...formaldehyde is carcinogenic to humans, based on sufficient evidence in humans and in experimental animals.
