Please join us to learn more about Sustainable Food Management at Federal facilities on Thursday, February 28! This webinar will focus on reducing wasted food at all different types of Federal facilities – from small to large and office buildings to hospitals. This session will feature expert speakers from the General Services Administration, Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center, South Texas Veteran Health System, and the Environmental Protection Agency. There will be a question and answer session following each presentation.

Speakers:
Lena Kofas is an Environmental Protection Specialist with the U.S. General Services Administration's (GSA) Public Buildings Service in Washington, DC. She is the national program coordinator for solid waste diversion and recycling, and works with a network of Regional coordinators to promote sustainable waste management practices in GSA managed federal buildings.

Guadalupe Novoa is the Regional Recycling Coordinator for the General Services Administration (Region 9). She oversees solid waste management which includes: recycling, composting, hazardous waste (e-waste), and construction and demolition waste.

Barbara Hartman, MS, RD, LD, is the Chief of Nutrition and Food Service at the Martinsburg, West Virginia VA Medical Center where she and her staff have redesigned their business practices to include a “Green Kitchen” focus. They have successfully implemented a “Waste Watchers” project that has improved compliance with the EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy by implementing source reduction, composting, and food donation programs. They have also worked toward improving the conservation of energy and water, and have increased their service of sustainable foods and beverages. In April 2010, the Waste Watchers program won the VA Sustainability Award in the waste management category. In October 2010, they won the GreenGov Presidential Award, Good Neighbor category for their Waste Watchers and local food procurement practices.

Dorian Wilkins Foster, Ms, RD, LD, is an Administrative Dietitian for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, Texas. Formerly a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica, she has been with the VA since 1992 and has served in multiple roles. Having witnessed food waste as well as human hunger, Dorian is passionate about finding ways to let one problem help solve the other.

Laura Moreno is an environmental scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Southwest Regional Office. Laura is the regional lead for the Federal Green Challenge and the Food Recovery Challenge and works to reduce food waste reaching landfills through source reduction, food donation, composting, and anaerobic digestion.

The Federal Green Challenge is an effort to get Federal facilities and offices across the country to reduce their environmental impact by targeting waste, electronics, purchasing, energy, water, and transportation. The Food Recovery Challenge is an effort to reduce the more than 33 million tons of food that is currently reaching landfills in the United States.
