MilfordDailyNews:
The propane tank fire at the Saint Gobain Containers plant that sent one man to the hospital with facial burns Sunday is now under investigation by the Milford Fire Department and the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration.
Milford firefighters responded to the plant on National Street just before 7:30 a.m. after a propane tank caught fire while an employee was filling it.
The 55-year-old employee was treated at Milford Regional Medical Center for first-degree burns on his face and neck, but was released just a few hours later, according to Deputy Fire Chief William Touhey, who classified his injuries as minor.
Touhey said the department is still investigating the cause of the fire, but said it was accidental.
"We're just trying to verify how it started," Touhey said. "More than likely it was a static spark."
OSHA's Springfield office did open an investigation into the fire Monday to determine if there were any workplace safety violations. If the inspection identifies violations, OSHA could issue citations and propose fines for the employer.
