The Energy Department's Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has issued a request for information (RFI) regarding waste- to-energy (WTE) technologies. https://eere-exchange.energy.gov/#FoaIdf99e666f-db09-464f-84ec-be0a2f05c21e seeks feedback from stakeholders on the state of technology and commercial readiness of WTE.
WTE technologies repurpose a variety of waste sources using a variety of conversion processes to produce bioenergy, biofuels, or bioproducts. Waste represents a plentiful, untapped resource in the United States; the majority of municipal solid waste is sent to landfills, releasing nearly one billion metric tons of methane into the atmosphere every year. Developing this resource into commercially-viable biomass has numerous benefits, including reducing methane emissions and facilitating energy independence and security.
This RFI seeks input from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders to assist the Department and BETO with the development of a targeted program in advanced WTE technologies. The resulting submissions will inform the Department on the potential need for financial assistance to advance these technologies to achieve widespread commercialization.
Categories within the RFI include the state of the industry and overall readiness; the transition from pilot to commercial scale; and distributed- and community-scale applications of WTE.
Responses to the RFI must be submitted by 8:00 p.m. ET on July 15, 2013.
