Big Oil: 'World has reached peak petroleum'
It's amazing enough that the normally staid International Energy Agency recently said we've run out of time. Now Business Wire reports:
According to a new survey by BDO Seidman, LLP, one of the nation's leading accounting and consulting organizations, 48 percent of chief financial officers (CFOs) at U.S. oil and gas exploration and production companies agree that the world has reached its peak petroleum (liquid hydrocarbon) production rate or will reach it within the next few years, while another 52 percent disagree with that statement.
The point is, it is not just the "peakists" who think we have a big, big problem. And it's not just the CFOs. The CEO of Royal Dutch/Shell emailed his employees, "Shell estimates that after 2015 supplies of easy-to-access oil and gas will no longer keep up with demand." The CEO of French oil company Total S.A., said that production of even 100 million barrels a day by 2030 will be "difficult." The CEO of ConocoPhillips said, "I don't think we are going to see the supply going over 100 million barrels a day."
Remember, the problem is far graver than it appears for one simple reason: Replacing oil in the transportation sector requires strong government action two decades before a peak because of the time needed to replace vehicles and fuel infrastructure. That was the conclusion of a major study funded by the Bush Department of Energy in 2005 on "Peaking of World Oil Production" [PDF]. The report notes:
The world has never faced a problem like this. Without massive mitigation more than a decade before the fact, the problem will be pervasive and will not be temporary. Previous energy transitions (wood to coal and coal to oil) were gradual and evolutionary; oil peaking will be abrupt and revolutionary.

Geothermal energy is all the rage these days, with the talk of its capability to solve all our energy woes. I had a chance to visit The Geysers, North America's largest Geothermal operation (generating about 40% of the geothermal power in the US) and I've gotta tell you, I'm more fired up than I was before. (I can't promise not to throw a couple more bad puns in there before this post is through but I hope you'll bear with me)
Geothermal power produces emission free, steam-based energy by utilizing heat from the earth's core. It is so cool. Each plant will have a slightly different set-up based on the rock formations below the surface, but here's how it works at the Geysers. Two miles below the surface of the earth is hot magma (say it with me: liquid hot mag-ma). One level above that is a porous seabed rock, filled with thousands of tiny cracks. The water from the ancient seabed is filtered through those cracks, and heat from the magma turns that water to steam. The plant works by drilling a narrow hole down 2 miles to the porous rock level, and the steam shoots up the hole. Pressure from the steam turns a turbine, and then, boys and girls, electricity is made.
Big Money, Big Power
The Geysers is operated by Calpine, an energy generation company in northern California. Calpine operates 19 power plants at the Geysers, employs 350 full time staff, and is capable of generating 725 megawatts of power-- enough to power 40,000 homes! The firm also has a fleet of natural gas powered plants. All in all, it's one of the cleanest power generation companies in the US, and it supplies about 20% of California's renewable energy. Renewable energy is big business in California, where the state's utilities are required to source 20% of their power from renewables by 2010 as well as 33% by 2020. This means that locally produced clean power like geothermal will continue to be in high demand. The high demand is evidenced by a higher premium for renewable energy-- around 11c/kwh for renewable power compared to an average price of around 7.5c paid for energy that doesn't meet the renewable standard. Closed Loop System
Over time, that steam, the bread and butter of a geothermal operation, can be depleted, since it's blowing out at a constant rate. The Geysers plant has been operating since 1960-that's a lot of hot air. The folks at Calpine have figured out an innovative way to replenish their cash cow. They have contracted with the city of Santa Rosa as a handy disposal for wastewater produced there. 4,015 million gallons of treated wastewater make the 40-mile trek each year to the Geysers, where it's sent down old shafts to refill the porous rock layer. This water quickly becomes heated and goes up the operational vents as steam. The whole process can take an hour or a day-it's tough to tell for sure because it depends on where the water goes 2 miles underground, but it's pretty fast all around.
Old Faithful Plugging Away
Whenever I go on tours like this I'm always struck by how not ecologically minded the folks working at the plant are. At the Geysers, each plant is maintained by a single tech who works a 12 hour shift. The tech we spoke to had been working at the plant for 25 years-and he gave Homer Simpson a run for his money with mutton chops, 70s child molester glasses, suspenders over Carhartts and an expression on his face somewhere between surprise, irritation, and boredom at the presence of these environmentalists drooling over his plant. This man was no treehugger. But he doesn't have to be. The Geysers has been operational since the 60s not because it's green or trendy but because the economic model for producing electricity makes good business sense. These are the types of solutions we really need for the green revolution.

Decaying Nuclear Powered Soviet Era Lighthouses
Soviet Union decided to build a chain of lighthouses to guide ships finding their way in the dark polar night across uninhabited shores of the Soviet Russian Empire. So it has been done and a series of such lighthouses has been erected. They had to be fully autonomous, because they were situated hundreds and hundreds miles away from any populated areas. After reviewing different ideas on how to make them work for a years without service and any external power supply, Soviet engineers decided to implement atomic energy to power up those structures. So, special lightweight small atomic reactors were produced in limited series to be delivered to the Polar Circle lands and to be installed on the lighthouses. Those small reactors could work in the independent mode for years and didn't require any human interference, so it was very handy in the situation like this. It was a kind of robot-lighthouse which counted itself the time of the year and the length of the daylight, turned on its lights when it was needed and sent radio signals to near by ships to warn them on their journey. It all looks like ran out the sci-fi book pages, but so they were.From the Department of Bad Ideas, an impressive piece of engineering and construction executed by some very cold Russians. Sure, it made sense for the time. And maybe micro-nuclear plants still do make sense in some pragmatic, world politics vacuum sort of way.

I love your title “Use Free Trade to Fight Climate Change”.
It perfectly illustrates the lack of science and understanding in the whole global warming hysteria.
One cannot stop climate change. There is absolutely nothing that human beings can do to stop the climate from changing.
One can stop human pollution and carbon emissions (in theory), but the climate is constantly changing, one way or another.
More than 10,000 years ago, all of Canada and the northern 1/3 of the US was covered in a giant glacier, this melted due to global warming, more than 9,900 years before the industrial revolution.

Considering that the incoming Obama administration’s energy policy looks to favor second generation biofuels, wind, solar and geothermal power to a greater degree than previous policy, these statistics cited by the Environmental Working Group as much a reminder of things past as much as a warning on how not to do things in the future. Nonetheless, it is useful to, as the EWG puts it, “take a hard, clear-eyed look at...corn-based ethanol’s stranglehold on federal renewable energy tax credits and subsidies. This how things looked in 2007:
Ethanol Got $3 Billion in 2007
According to data EWG dragged up from EIA information released in April of 2008, in 2007 the ethanol industry received $3 billion in federal tax credits, which biodiesel received $180 million, and solar, wind and geothermal combined received $750 million. For those keen on percentages, that’s 76% for ethanol and 19% for solar, wind and geothermal.
America Can Do Better
Saying that “America can do better” and citing oft-heard reasons for corn-based ethanol not being all it was once claimed to be (limited potential for offsetting meaningful amounts of fossil fuels, dubious carbon emission reduction claims), the EWG is calling for politicians to 1) “phase out tax credits for corn ethanol and subsidize biofuels only if they show clear promise to meet strict climate and environmental protection standards;” and 2) “rebalance the US renewable energy and energy conservation portfolio to favor options that do the most to reduce fossil fuel use, safeguard the environment, spur more widely-shared economic development and increase energy security.”
While I'm right there with EWG in thinking that the US would do well to put corn ethanol behind it, move forward to better sources of renewable energy and concentrate even more on energy conservation, and stop being so beholden to Big Corn in general—so right on for the EWG in what they are advocating—is anyone else a bit tired of all the recommendations for what Barack Obama should or should not do? Let's all give the man until February 1 to get innaugurated and settle in to his new abode before again telling him what he ought to be doing.
The changes we need to make sustainable energy a reality:

Top 11 compounds in US drinking water
Little was known about people's exposure to such compounds from drinking water, so Shane Snyder and colleagues at the Southern Nevada Water Authority in Las Vegas screened tap water from 19 US water utilities for 51 different compounds. The surveys were carried out between 2006 and 2007.
The 11 most frequently detected compounds - all found at extremely low concentrations - were:
• Atenolol, a beta-blocker used to treat cardiovascular disease
• Atrazine, an organic herbicide banned in the European Union, but still used in the US, which has been implicated in the decline of fish stocks and in changes in animal behaviour
• Carbamazepine, a mood-stabilising drug used to treat bipolar disorder, amongst other things
• Estrone, an oestrogen hormone secreted by the ovaries and blamed for causing gender-bending changes in fish
• Gemfibrozil, an anti-cholesterol drug
• Meprobamate, a tranquiliser widely used in psychiatric treatment
• Naproxen, a painkiller and anti-inflammatory linked to increases in asthma incidence
• Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant that has been used to treat epilepsy
• Sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic used against the Streptococcus bacteria, which is responsible for tonsillitis and other diseases
• TCEP, a reducing agent used in molecular biology
• Trimethoprim, another antibiotic
The concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water were millions of times lower than in a medical dose, and Snyder emphasises that they pose no public health threat. He cautions, though, that "if a person has a unique health condition, or is concerned about particular contaminants in public water systems, I strongly recommend they consult their physician".
Christian Daughton of the EPA's National Exposure Research Laboratory says that neither this nor other recent water assessments give cause for health concern. "But several point to the potential for risk - especially for the fetus and those with severely compromised health."
Daughton says the contamination surveys help people realise how they are intimately and inseparably connected with their environment. "The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment also serves to make us acutely aware of the chemical sea that surrounds us," he says.
Modern life
While the US government regulates the levels of pathogens in US drinking water, there are no rules for pharmaceuticals and other compounds, apart from one: the herbicide atrazine. The atrazine levels measured by Snyder and colleagues were well within federal limits.
Snyder says water utilities could make drinking water purer. But the costs of "extreme purification" - far beyond what is needed for safety alone - are huge in terms of increased energy usage and carbon footprint. Ultra-pure water might not even be safe, adds Snyder.
The widespread occurrence of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors reflects improved detection techniques, rather than greater pollution, says Snyder. Contamination is a fact of modern life, he adds.
"As we continue to populate and aggregate, our wastes will certainly accumulate where we live," he says. "We as a species have decided to live a modern life, with pharmaceuticals, plastics, transportation - therefore we must accept that there will be a certain degree of contamination."

Gas Fight: T. Boone Pickens and FedEx Square Off

Dallas billionaire T. Boone Pickens and FedEx Corp. chief executive Fred Smith are now duking it outover, of all things, the virtues of natural gas as a transportation fuel.
Since announcing the "Pickens Plan" in July, the oilman-cum-wind power booster has spent over $60 million, along with countless hours zig-zagging the country in his corporate jet, to promote his plan for using wind power and natural-gas vehicles to break the country's foreign-oil habit. The Oklahoma-born oil magnate insists the U.S. could cut its oil imports by one-third in 10 years by mandating that all new long-haul trucks dump diesel in favor of liquefied natural gas.
But Mr. Pickens has his opponents, including FedEx CEO Fred Smith, who favors electrification of the transporation fleet. Mr. Smith argues that hybrids are the way to go, and is putting his money where his mouth is. With 80,000 motorized vehicles, FedEx now boasts the largest fleet of commercial hybrid trucks in North America.
Without naming Mr. Pickens, the company's director of sustainability, Mitch Jackson, upped the ante on Sunday with a blog item blasting natural gas as transport fuel of the future. After citing a list of reasons against using natural gas instead of diesel, Mr. Jackson concludes that "substituting one fossil fuel for another may mean we're shifting our energy supply, but it doesn't necessarily mean we're going anywhere."
Mr. Pickens then let rip with a rebuttal that accuses Mr. Jackson of making a "flawed argument" by misunderstanding the country's natural-gas reserves and overstating the value of diesel hybrids.
"Not only does Jackson need to do more homework on the domestic availability and clean air benefits of natural gas," Mr. Pickens writes in his Daily Pickens blog, "he needs to realize that deploying vehicles that use slightly less foreign oil - vehicles that have little testing or are not available in the marketplace will not solve America's energy crisis."

Crops absorb livestock antibiotics, science shows
As the amount of antibiotics in the soil increased, so too did the levels taken up by the corn, potatoes and other plants.
Less than 0.1 percent of antibiotics applied to soil were absorbed into the corn, lettuce and other plants. Though a tiny amount, health implications for people consuming such small, cumulative doses are largely unknown.
“The antibiotic accumulation in plants is just another negative consequence of our animal agriculture industry and not surprising given the quantity fed to livestock,” said Steve Roach, public health program director for the non-profit Food Animal Concerns Trust.
“We are a chemical society and humans are the main user of pharmaceutical products,” said Gupta. “We need a better understanding of what takes place when chemicals are applied to sources of food and must be more vigilant about regulating what we use to grow food and what we put in our bodies.”

Such energy policy makers argue that one is naive to think that we could supplant a substantial portion of traditional power sources with renewable energy sources. For example, Triple Pundit opines that “only a fool would believe we could transition our energy infrastructure over the course of one presidential term.”
Yet, Triple Pundit further states:
And only a bigger fool would seek to stall progress by arguing this transition will be too difficult to integrate, and is therefore not worth doing. Especially when you consider the fact that almost all of our power needs can be generated from renewable energy resources.
And, it is an even more important clarification, since 8 years of Bush have left us desperately fighting to save the planet from catastrophic 5-7°C warming by 2100. With much higher global emissions than 8 years ago, and a lost decade of inefficient, polluting infrastructure built at a cost of many trillions of dollars, we now have much less time.

Furthermore, nuclear power plants have a long lead time from planning to power production and are capital intensive (at a time when capital funding is dwindling). OTOH, true renewable energy sources like wind, solar and geothermal can be brought on line in less time and less capital.

Why our energy answer will be nuclear power
Mr. Obama scolded Exelon and federal regulators for inaction and introduced a bill to require all plant owners to notify state and local authorities immediately of even small leaks. He has boasted of it on the campaign trail, telling a crowd in December that it was "the only nuclear legislation that I've passed.". . .
A close look at the path his legislation took tells a very different story. While he initially fought to advance his bill, even holding up a presidential nomination to try to force a hearing on it, Mr. Obama eventually rewrote it to reflect changes sought by Senate Republicans, Exelon and nuclear regulators. The new bill removed language mandating prompt reporting and simply offered guidance to regulators, whom it charged with addressing the issue of unreported leaks. . .
Frank M. Clark, executive vice president to Exelon, and John W. Rogers Jr., a director there, are among his largest fund-raisers, according to the Times. John W. Rowe, also an Obama contributor, is chairman of the Nuclear Energy Institute, which is the nuclear power industry's lobbying group.
